Iraq
The much-publicized Western Desert Blocks are shown on the attached Map. There are nine blocks available for exploration opportunities to international oil companies. As an example, Block No.1 is approximately 13,650 sq km in area and includes over 6680 shot point locations.
This area has not been surveyed or explored in enough detail. It was generally thought less promising for exploration because of the limited thickness of the Cenozoic and Mesozoic. However, the recent discovery of gas, and super-light Arabian-type oil and condensate with low sulphur, in the Paleozoic at Akkas well in the Western Desert have highlighted the importance of the Paleozoic source and reservoir rocks. There is a huge potential for future discoveries in this part of Iraq.
